Islamic Center in Michigan Hit by Vandalism, Sparks Concern over Islamophobia

Leaders of a mosque in Warren, Michigan, reported that their Islamic center was vandalized over the weekend in an incident they fear may have been motivated by hate.

Hawzah News Agency- According to local sources, the Islamic Organization of North America (IONA) announced that its mosque in Warren was attacked on Sunday by unidentified vandals, who damaged walls, broke windows, and defaced equipment at the site of an ongoing expansion project.

Steve Elturk, president of IONA, expressed deep concern over the incident and urged Warren police to investigate it as a potential hate crime. We do not know what motivated those behind this act.

Warren police confirmed that detectives are investigating the incident. Meanwhile, the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) announced a reward of $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.

Dawud Walid, executive director of CAIR-MI and a prayer leader at the mosque, noted that while the graffiti left at the site was not overtly anti-Muslim, the incident raised concerns given the mosque’s history of threats and previous acts of vandalism.

Mosque leaders stated that while the attack caused several thousand dollars in damage, their primary concern was not the financial loss but the potentially hate-driven nature of the act.
